¶ Eclipse on Ubuntu

The instructions on this page are for outdated versions of Ubuntu.

As of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), you can apt-get install eclipse and it installs 3.5.1 out of the box.

¶ Old instructions

Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) ships with Eclipse 3.2.2 - a release from June 2006. The Android eclipse plugin requires 3.3, and 3.4 is the current stable release.

I was able to run Eclipse using openjdk-6-jdk and it's dependencies. It may have been necessary to install one or more of libswt-gtk-3.4-java, libswt-cairo-gtk-3.4,libswt-gnome-gtk-3.4.

• Download Eclipse 3.4. I grabbed the "Eclipse for Java developers"
• Untar in /opt. Eclipse will extract into a folder called eclipse
• cat "-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.XULRunnerPath=/usr/lib/xulrunner" >> /opt/eclipse/eclipse.ini

Run with /opt/eclipse/eclipse
